Among all the iconic symbols to remember uni life by, special offers are certainly up there with the best of them. Under the deluge of free keyrings and dodgy foreign DVDs, many of us unsurprisingly build up a stern resistance to this student land of the free over the years.

The ‘Eat out for £5’ offer in The Times was therefore met with a hefty dollop of scepticism in the Impact office; images of stepping into a fine restaurant only to be politely ushered into a back room and served microwaved Lasagne proved hard to shake off.
