Activities Loves Douggie
Nobody can doubt that Douggie loves Activities. Now we know that the voters love Douggie McMeekin, after he was elected to the post of Activities Officer.
He saw off strong opposition for the position from the likes of Richard Lockington, Candy Golend and Lawrence Bolton, mostly by means of a magnificent advertising campaign which included an almost constant presence amongst the candidates campaigning around campus and even playing ukulele and crooning to students at the North Entrance each morning.
“The ukulele helped because it was yellow” he said to Impact after his victory “And it didn’t even come out of my budget. I still have £12 left”
His slogan was undoubtedly one of the catchiest of the candidates, though it served to distort his policies, putting his personality before his aims in the role.
He has highlighted some areas he wishes to improve upon, such as improving the SU website, more support for societies and cheaper and better campus festivals. Actual concrete plans on how this would be achieved, however, remain elusive, and it is questionable how feasible some of his ambitions are.
In a campaign of flagrant, unashamed style over substance, Douggie has won over the voters. What he’ll do now he’s earned the position is anyone’s guess.

Evidence that the election does come down to a popularity contest, the man has no real policies, but at least he has a ukulele.
But it shows his enthusiasm. It is not necessarily popularity - it is the ability to make people have faith in the fact you will be proactive. Douggie achieved this and amazingly so. I think he will do the SU and the students proud!
what a joke! he had no real policies. lawrence and lockington had much better policies. as a societies president those 2 would definately have done the job! it’s not about who’s the best candidate, it’s who has the biggest campaigning army!
The fact most people voted for someone based upon the fact they were playing a ukulele is a joke, the elections every year are turning more and more into one big joke.
All of the activites’ officers who had a chance of winning had similar policies - they all want to improve the website, and make sure the facilities for socities etc are better.
What Dougie can bring is the fact he is madly enthusiastic and incredibly outgoing.
Since the Su in general suffers from a lack of connection with students, I say that he is a good choice.
Ok so he used a ukulele. Get over it. Seeing him singing around campus and showing his personality made me smile. The SU fails when the elected representatives do not understand what the students want. This is what Douggie can offer. Being elected a SU Exec position is not just about implementing policies - it is about running what is already set up. Douggie has extensive society experience - more than the other candidates. This is why he won and also why he will do the best job. Great policies and no charisma will get you nowhere.
So what if he was never President of a society. He is involved in so many elements of University life and surely, as students of the University, we want somebody representing us who truly understands the range of societies - whether it be lacrosse or New Theatre or the vast amount of other societies Douggie has involved himself in.
He truly deserved his elected position and I firmly believe he will work hard for the student body.
@ Stoke, anon, SU Fail
You take the words out of my mouth (or out of my fingertips in reality) - I couldn’t agree more!
You lot are actually gimps, i know douggie better than any of you and i can tell you for a fact getting this was importat to him and the amount of passion and his wide knowledge of activities having actually been involved in some at uni, more than mostof you can say for yourselves will make him a brilliant officer. So those of you cramped behind your laptops, playing creepy little computer games and overanalysing this need to chill out!
and he is hung like a donkey…FACT
Sorry, but some of you are complaining about douggie’s ukulele and how lawrence should have won instead.
Have you seen lawrence’s bloody video?!?!
Many, many congratulations to Douggie. He ran the best campaign by an absolute mile.
He came into our lectures and did an announcement twice and I saw him around campus. I don’t think I even saw a poster for Lockington. That’s why Douggie won.
As for his policies… I’m still waiting to find out what they are…
I’m so glad the dougs-meister won, he was by far the best candidate and he definately! has the cool factor. I think he has great etiquette on the lacrosse pitch and his passion for coolness and popularity really won the vote for me. i love you dougs! cock soc til i die..im cock sock til i dei! i know i am im sure i am im cock soc til i die! xxxxxxxxx
