Boy On The Roof
If you like youthful sounds permeated with a mixture of driving riffs and catchy hooks, then look no further than Boy on the Roof, the indie outfit fronted by current Nottingham University fresher Sam Hayward. Emerging out of a milieu of new and old influences alike (think The Smiths and White Lies), they demonstrate a surprising level of maturity for a band so young. They have even got that ‘Maccabee-esque’ live energy down to a tee to provide any indie junkie with a healthy supply. Having already supported Franz Ferdinand at an after show in Brixton, it would be hard to imagine a quiet future for this band. Feel free to jump on the proverbial bandwagon and check them out at myspace.com/boyontheroof.

URN After Dark
Here at Nottingham University we are lucky enough to be home to University Radio Nottingham (URN), which in 2010 was the recipient of ‘Best Student Radio Station’ at the Student Radio Awards. If you’re on the constant search for new music and prefer to indulge in the more alternative side of the artistic spectrum, then tune in to URN After Dark. Playing the best in brand new (and old) alternative music, including unsigned and local acts, After Dark serves up a variety of genre-specific shows spanning everything from Punk & Metal to the best in Urban and Dance. For fans of Interpol and Animal Collective listen to RadioLab, Mondays 11pm; for those who prefer the electro-pop of Cut Copy & jj, tune into James and Emma on at 11pm on a Thursday; and if Crystal Fighters & Foals are more your thing, then check out Sam & Char on at 9pm every Thursday. Forget the likes of Radio 1 and XFM, it’s time to tune into URN After Dark. Have a listen at urn1350.net.
