‘One World Week’ Photography Competition – Winner and Runner Ups
Winners from our One World Week Photography Competition.
Winner – A Tuareg Salt Trader – By Alex Tweedy (Image 1)
“This photo was taken in Timbuktu, Mali, and is a portrait of Mohammad, a Tuareg salt trader. He is one of the few remaining users of the Azalai trade route, taking his camels from Timbuktu, deep into the Sahara to the mines of Taoudenni more than 400 miles to the north. The encroaching of the Sahara into the Sahel regions of Mali means that arable land is shrinking at an alarming rate and food prices are rising accordingly – Mohammad can no longer provide for his family and elderly father on the income of the salt trade alone and instead now acts as a guide for foreign tourists around Timbuktu.”
Runner up – Giraffes in Tsavo – By Chandni Parmar (Image 2)
“It was a beautiful sunny day in Tsavo, Kenya where I took this picture. The different shades of blue in the sky, brown grass and green trees depict our environment and the changes occurring. I’ve always had a passion for Giraffes and they’ve been my favourite animal for as long as I can remember, which is one of the reasons I chose to send in this picture.”
Runner up – Children in Madagascar – By Angela Tolliday (Image 3)
“Madagascar is an incredible country and being the 4th biggest island in the world it possesses such a variety of amazing landscapes but unfortunately since its independence it is a country fighting a battle against high levels poverty. My experience was an awakening one, where you realise the realities of the world so far apart from the lives we live. When we visited a small town, the children would approach us running to demand sweets, pens and presents.”
