It’s day 5, which means it’s Liv’s turn to present you with Judy Garland’s immortal classic, ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’.

Judy Garland’s original of this heartbreakingly lovely song was recorded for the 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis and comes at a point in the film that would wet the tear ducts of even the hardest of men. Indeed it did; her performance at the Hollywood Canteen is said to have brought many of the soldiers to tears.

Its lyrics speak of tragedy, longing and most importantly that achingly American, sentimental Yuletide hope. While Frank Sinatra’s version is far more common, it is Garland’s personal tragedy and strife that make this particular version so incredibly sad and so incredibly beautiful.
