We kick off our series showcasing the greatest shorts you can find on the web with a personal favourite of mine with the awesome Australian animation The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello.

Astutely described by a YouTube commenter as “steampunk with shadow puppets”, Anthony Lucas’ The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello is an intriguing sci-fi short set in an alternate world where cities stretch into the clouds and vast airships rule the skies.

The story concerns royal navigator Jasper Morello and his quest to find a cure for the plague that is decimating the industrial city of Gothia.

Inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Jules Verne, Lucas used a variety of animation techniques to bring his vision to life. The contrast of the silhouetted action against the glaring skyline create some simplistic yet vibrant images.

Fans of sci-fi should certainly be charmed by Jasper Morello‘s distinctive depiction of an alternative future, while the plot should be enough to keep everyone else captivated. Check it out below.
