Friday Five-Way: 4th October

The Five Way got back on track last week with a solid 4/5. After Saturday’s games we were riding high on a full house and went into Sunday with one of the safest bets, Inter vs Cagliari, the only one left to play. And then in unrivalled scenes, the boys from Milan capitulated and basement side Cagliari’s exciting wingman Ekdal netted a 15 minute hat-trick to sink our dreams. This weekend has provided some bumper selections though at some very attractive odds, so, we go again!

Leicester vs. Burnley – Sat 4th October – K.O. 3pm
Prediction: HOME WIN
Odds: 4/5

It’s the Premier League’s 12th and 20th placed sides meeting at the King Power this Saturday, both coming in off the back of losses last weekend (Leicester 2-0 to Palace and Burnley 4-0 at WBA). Sadly that’s nothing new to Burnley who, apart from Newcastle, are the only side still without a win this campaign. Whereas Leicester will be hoping to show the Palace defeat was nothing more than a hangover from their monumental 5-3 win against United. Burnley haven’t had a win at Leicester since 2007 and have lost 5 and drawn 2 of the last 7 encounters between the two sides. And the only way I can see this one going is another Foxes victory – HOME WIN.

Walsall vs. Bristol City – Sat 4th October – K.O. 3pm
Prediction: AWAY WIN
Odds: 6/4

League 1 is already in danger of becoming a one horse race as 1st place Bristol City are running away with things after 7 wins and 3 draws from the opening 10 games. Walsall, on the other hand, are looking like they could be the league’s draw specialists after 5 draws and just 3 wins sees them only as far as 17th. Last weekend a confident Bristol side overcame high flying title rivals MK Dons in a thrilling match that finished 3-2 and I really wouldn’t be surprised to see them go the season unbeaten! And they should certainly get the 3 points tomorrow against a Walsall side who haven’t beaten them since February 2005 – AWAY WIN

Bayern Munich vs. Hannover 96 – Sat 4th October – K.O. 2.30pm
Prediction: HOME WIN
Odds: 2/13

Its business as usual in the Bundesliga as Bayern are on top once again (and will probably remain there for the course of the season). In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if the German FA decided to just award them the trophy now, to save themselves the time in summer! In 6th place Hannover haven’t started badly but, that said, Bayern have already scored more than double the goals (11 – 5) and have leaked only half the number of goals that the ’96 have (2 – 4). Like all German sides, Hannover have traditionally struggled against Bayern, managing just 2 goals in the last 5 meetings compared to 21 from Bayern over the same period – HOME WIN.

PSG vs. Monaco – Sun 5th October – K.O. 8pm
Prediction: HOME WIN (DNB)
Odds: 1/2

Bizarrely this one is 4th place against 12th as France’s money boys are both struggling to keep pace with the likes of modest budgeted Marseille and Bordeaux. PSG’s midweek 3-2 victory against Barca probably saved Laurent Blanc’s job as many pundits speculated that he wouldn’t still be in the hot seat for this one had his men lost. Now whilst a CL group game victory isn’t the making of his team, it’s the nature of the performance that has got me thinking this is the turning point.

Most notably the passion of the squad, personified by Marquinhos who screamed to the heavens in delight after his last ditch block denied Jordi Alba a sure fire goal. Its that inner-fight that will give PSG the edge against a Monaco side who have lost half their games and are really struggling for goals following the departures of Falcao and Rodriguez over summer (All but one of Monaco’s games have been decided by 1 goal). Having said this, the last 4 league meetings have been draws so I’m throwing in a Draw No Bet on this one just to make sure – HOME WIN DNB.

BRAVEBET
Charlton vs. Birmingham – Sat 4th October – K.O. 3pm
Prediction: HOME WIN
Odds: 5/4

Alan Pardew out of the equation and Lee Clark must be the odds on favourite to be next for the axe anywhere in the footballing world, after the Brummies have managed just one victory in their last 9 games. The real salt in the wounds came last weekend when Birmingham let a one goal lead slip at home to bottom club Fulham and were booed off the pitch.

Charlton, on the other hand, are fast becoming neutrals’ choice because of their battling displays on a shoestring budget. They may not score many goals but as the midweek 1-0 win at Norwich showed, Bob Peeters has made them very difficult to break down. Charlton managed just 2 shots on target all game but won because of the brick wall partnership that is Andre Bikey and Tal Ben Haim. The duo have played a massive part in crafting an unbeaten home record, where Derby, Wigan, Watford and Wolves have all come and then gone with their tails between their legs, battered a bruised. There’ll be no Ben Haim due to observation of a religious festival but I still can’t see a down trodden Brum getting anything – HOME WIN
