Trailer Watch – The Gambler

Mark Wahlberg stars in the remake of the 1974 film, The Gambler, where he plays Jim Bennett, a literature professor with, as you may have guessed, a really big gambling problem. His addiction leads him to trouble with all sorts of wrong crowds, and he has to overcome numerous obstacles in order to get himself out of the mess.

There will be two words that resonate with you after you watch this trailer – f*ck you. This attention-grabbing trailer centers on a conversation between Bennett (Wahlburg) and a loan shark (John Goodman), and let’s just say they will have to put quite a few dollars in the swear jar…

Each beat reveals all levels of violence, action and brilliant members of the cast. We get glimpses of Jessica Lange as Bennett’s mother, and Brie Larson, known for her role in 21 Jump Street, who plays Bennet’s girlfriend. You might also notice a significantly thinner Wahlburg; he apparently dropped a jaw-dropping 60 pounds for this role.

This trailer definitely left me wanting more. Director Rupert Wyatt, who helmed the movie ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, definitely seems to have brought a lot to the table even from just this tiny sneak peak into the movie, which builds the movie up to be what I hope will be an incredible action-packed crime thriller. Check out the trailer and you’ll see what I’m talking about – though if you’re at work or in class, I’d recommend wearing your headphones…
