Advent Calendar #18: Band Aid- ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

The first, and best, version of the Band Aid charity song was recorded in 1984. Masterminded by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, it includes many of the most established stars of the 80s, Duran Duran, George Michael, Paul Weller- they’re all here.

Each is given a chance to shine, giving the emotional lyrics a powerful punch. Staying at number one for 5 weeks (and being Christmas Number One) it has now evolved into a Christmas classic you hear every year without fail. Perhaps overplayed, but still just as good to listen to.
