Anti-Advent Calendar #11

Christmas. List. Day 11…

Think Elf, think It’s a Wonderful Life, nothing sets the Christmas mood better than the image of pure, untouched and untarnished snowfall. Which is why you’ll be finding none of that here. It’s the hottest day of the Summer on the streets of Brooklyn and tensions are a-brewing in Spike Lee’s most iconic work, Do the Right Thing.

Following the day in the life of an eclectic cast of characters including Mookie (Spike Lee), a pizza delivery boy with a lack of ambition; Sal (Danny Aiello), the American-Italian owner of the local pizzeria and his racist son, Pino (John Turturro). Racial tensions are felt throughout erupting in an inevitable violent crescendo.

“You wanna boycott someone? You ought to start with the goddamn barber that fucked up your head.”

An important piece of fiction with an important message as powerful today as it was a quarter of a century ago. A film that should be compulsory viewing for all, so if you haven’t seen it, this Christmas is the best time to educate yourself.
