Anti-Advent Calendar #19

Christmas. The perfect time to start enjoying some musicals, and day 19 is presenting you with Takashi Miike’s take on the genre…

From the director of such challenging works as Ichi the Killer and Visitor Q one wouldn’t expect such a jovial film as The Happiness of the Katakuris, though the darkly surreal tangents and surprise left turns are very much in the same vein as Audition.

The Katakuris are a family who have just purchased a building in the mountains in order to start a bed and breakfast. The White Lover’s Inn, as it becomes known, soon finds its fortune as the final stay for a number of patrons, as all those who visit start to accidentally die in increasingly bizarre ways. To avoid losing money, the family choose to hide the bodies piling up rather than report the deaths.

Add to this morbid and madcap concept stop-motion animated monsters, song-and-dance numbers and even a karaoke sequence, The Happiness of the Katakuris shows there’s nothing quite like family this Christmastime…
