Anti-Advent Calendar #7

Christmas. As if the countdown is still going. And as if we’re stilling sticking with this delightfully subversive advent calendar! Anyway, onto day seven’s pick…

If you’re looking for a film to watch with the family this holiday season then this will certainly raise some eyebrows. In 2000 American Psycho introduced audiences to Patrick Bateman, a wealthy New York investment banking executive, whose favourite pastimes include “murders and executions mostly”.

“Hey Paul!…”

Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Machinist) delivers a deeply disturbing performance that will leave you wide-eyed at homicidal acts. What makes this performance so compelling is the sheer range of emotions Bale is able to hit – from the cool, calm and in-control manner he presents to his co-workers to the raging maniac that you can see simmer just below surface and explode in some of the film’s standout scenes.

“…I just had to kill a lot of people!”

With a star-filled supporting cast including Jared Leto (Dallas Buyer’s Club), Willem Dafoe (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), American Psycho explores the human psyche and is a playground of scenes showing just what would happen if we lost control of all morality; just what you want to think about when someone takes the last Quality Street this Christmas.
