Music Advent Calendar #11: Snow Patrol – ‘When I Get Home for Christmas’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

What could be more festive than going home for Christmas? However, as is their fortay, Snow Patrol manage to twist this jolly title into a slightly depressing plea for forgiveness.  The song’s lyrics depict a guy who has screwed up his relationship to the point that his long-distance partner thinks he’s cheating. This song is his way of winning them back, explaining that it was all a misunderstanding and singing about the wonderful Christmas they’ll have together once they get over it.

Overall, it’s very Snow Patrol. The repetition of the guitar riff, the quieter drums, and Gary Lightbody’s distinctive vocals are calming, making you concentrate on the lyrics which, as it’s an apology, makes sense. It’s easy to imagine listening to this track when travelling on a long trip back home, with lots of wistful staring into the distance.  The message for the holidays? Don’t admit to loving someone else before the holidays and if you do, sing to them for forgiveness.
