2016: Hot Or Not – Hail, Caesar!

Let’s wave goodbye to 2015! Good times, bad times we’ve had them all – but you know what they say, as one door closes, another one opens. Over the coming month we’ll be bringing you a snapshot of everything 2016 has to offer – the good, the bad and the ugly. Hold on to your hats folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

The Coen Brothers are back this February with a comedy that promises to impress with their classic style. Joined by serial partners in crime, George Clooney and Frances McCormand alongside a stellar cast including the likes of Josh Brolin, Jonah Hill and Scarlett Johansson.

The film stars Brolin as the ‘Fixer’ Eddie Mannix who is tasked with the responsibility of regaining movie star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) who has been kidnapped. Set on a 1950’s Hollywood film set for the upcoming ‘Hail, Caesar’ that lends its name to the film.

The trailer provided a large slice of what we have come to expect from a Coen brother’s comedy. The cinematography looks bold and ambitious as it usually is. This combined with the dry and dark humour that is so prevalent in films such as The Big Lebowski and O Brother Where Art Thou apparent, already it seems that Joel and Ethan are going to take the highly competitive first film quarter of 2016 by storm. Also there is a brilliant image of Channing Tatum in a sailor’s uniform which is not to be missed.

Brolin looks like a perfect fit for the part of Mannix as his tough, gritty persona mixed with a small amount of humour makes for a great Coen’s protagonist. His chase after ‘The Future’ was very carefully revealed in the trailer with little given away leading to a high amount of intrigue, but it seems as though it is guaranteed to be entertaining.

It’s been a while since Joel and Ethan have given us one of their typical ensemble pieces, 2008’s Burn After Reading, and with the potential Hail, Caesar! is showing so far it looks as though it’s going to be worth the wait.
