Gender Neutral Toilets: Referendum Passed by UoNSU

The University of Nottingham’s Students’ Union (UoNSU) has today (20th March) passed a motion to provide at least one gender neutral toilet on all floors, with more than two gendered toilets on the same floor.

A referendum opened on the 9th March, and closed with the SU elections on Friday 17th March. The results meant that gender neutral toilets are now part of the Students’ Union policy.

Lux Huntington, current LGBT+ Officer, told Impact:

“I have been pushing this policy forward since before my term as officer even began. The campaign officers on the LGBT+ Network committee took the policy to union council, where it fell short of passing by one vote.

The policy then went to referenda, where we needed to reach a quorum of 836 votes, with the majority in favour of the policy. We set up a coordinating campaign committee (comprised of network members as well as committee) to help campaign for the policy to pass.

“I am thrilled to say that we exceeded the 836 quorum and the majority of votes were in favour!”

The quorum for this referendum was set at 836 votes. The results were:

In favour of gender neutral toilets: 2568 votes.

Against gender neutral toilets: 1733 votes.

Abstain: 517 votes.

Yo referenda is the plural, referendum is the singular, so you might want to change the title of this article 🙂
