Top Hair Trends of 2017

From the classic fringe to vivid colour, 2017 has shown us some interesting hair trends. Here are the top 5 trends seen over the year so far, ranging from classic styles that never seem to go out of fashion to some which can be considered more innovative!

The Wig

The first trend, sported by many celebrities, is the wig. This one night hair trend has become popular with the Kardashians. Scrolling through Kylie Jenner’s Instagram you can see a variety of different wigs: short, long and even vibrantly coloured. In the past, celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj have been known for wearing wigs on the red carpet; however, is this becoming the convention amongst other celebrities? At this year’s BRIT awards, Little Mix surprised us by performing in blonde wigs. Custom made wigs and hair pieces are also becoming popular amongst us mere mortals. Not only are we influenced by mainstream celebrities embracing the new wig trend, but also social media stars and ‘Beauty Gurus’, such as ItsLikelyMakeup and Glam&Gore, who make YouTube videos and post pictures to Instagram of this one night trend. You may even find that they offer discount codes so you can purchase your very own wig.

The Visible Root

Anyone who colours their hair will understand the frustration when you begin to see re-growth: do you book an appointment at the salon or should you wait a few more weeks? Now is the time to start letting your hair grow out because our next trend is visible roots. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been styling the grown-out roots since the early noughties but over the past year we have seen an increase in celebrities on the red carpet catching onto the trend. Margot Robbie was seen earlier this year at Marie Claire’s Image Maker Awards in LA, looking fashionable with blonde wavy hair and light brown roots. This trend is perfect for those of us who want to be fashion-forward but also want a low maintenance hair colour.

The Bright Colour

The next trend is bright coloured hair, which is a bit more ‘out there’. I regularly spot people around campus with pink or blue hair. This vibrant trend has become popular with a lot of celebrities such as Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner and Rita Ora. This is another style that has become popular on social media. Stylist Guy Tang can be seen on his Instagram and YouTube channel styling the hair of the likes of Joey Graceffa, who he gave ‘merman hair colour’ using deep greens and blues. Unfortunately for most, in order to achieve a vibrant hair colour, you have to start with a light base which often involves bleaching your hair, which can be very damaging. Guy Tang is known for using Olaplex, which is one of the only conditioning treatments that can allow you to go from dark to blonde hair with minimal breakage. Olaplex permanently rebuilds the damaged disulphide bonds in your hair that are broken during the chemical process. Nevilles, located in London, were the first salon to stock it but it’s now available in over 2,500 salons nationwide!

The Balayage

It is the dawn of the Balayage! Balayage is a hair colouring technique where the stylist ditches the foils and colours the hair freehand, providing a natural looking sun-kissed hair colour. It is set apart from traditional hair colouring because the freestyle application means it can be modified for every person and a Balayage expert should be able to place the colour perfectly to suit your skin tone. It is a low maintenance trend as the colour should grow out naturally without any harsh lines. This style is often seen at red carpet events, on the likes of Khloe Kardashion at this year’s Oscars.

The Long Fringe

Our final trend is one of my personal favourites, and is inspired by French actress and model Brigitte Bardot – the long fringe! The popularity of fringes has been somewhat cyclical, but it never truly goes out of style. The Bardot-esque fringe is shorter in the middle and longer at the sides, so it frames the face. That means this style suits all face shapes, and thanks to the help of straighteners even people with curly hair can pull off the Bardot fringe! This haircut has been sported by many celebs like Chloe Mortez, Alexa Chung and Taylor Swift!
